Rust typically occurs when the surface coating is damaged. We have made the coating as thick as possible. Any coating will wear down during use. To protect your hitch, consider using two universal 2-inch trailer hitch pins with a 5/8" diameter – one to lock the receiver and the other to lock the dual ball. If you only have one locking pin, it's better to lock the receiver and take off the dual ball for separate storage.
